The Del Rubio Triplets: Allee Willis’ Rediscovery of a Kitsch Musical Sensation

🎸🎸🎸 Today, we celebrate what would have been the Del Rubio Triplets’ 103rd birthday by sharing a special moment from their unforgettable journey with Allee Willis. Known for their unique blend of kitsch and charm, Eadie, Elena, and Milly Del Rubio became a massive part of Allee’s life, embodying her love for combining high and low elements of art.

Although the Del Rubio’s had been performing for many years, it was Allee’s rediscovery of them in 1985 that reignited their careers and introduced them to a new generation. Captivated by a flyer that boasted “Three Gals/ Three Guitars…We play 375 different kinds of music,” Allee was immediately intrigued by their mini-skirted, go-go-booted style. She knew they had to perform her songs. Their rendition of The Pointer Sisters’ “Neutron Dance” at one of Allee’s legendary parties, alongside Ruth Pointer herself, was a musical highlight that she cherished as much as winning a Grammy.

Allee’s rediscovery of the Del Rubio’s led to countless new opportunities, bringing them back into the spotlight and landing them roles on television shows like “The Golden Girls,” where they were introduced as the Donatello Triplets in a memorable 1989 episode.

As Allee wrote, “The Del Rubio’s were a massive part of my life… To have the opportunity to hear my hits performed Del Rubio style was the biggest reward of all to a budding kitsch lover such as myself.”

Let’s take a moment to remember the joy, laughter, and unique talent they brought into the world, perfectly exemplified in this clip of them performing “Neutron Dance” on “The Golden Girls” – a testament to their enduring charm and Allee’s incredible knack for rediscovering the weird and wonderful.
