How Allee Willis’ Iconic Asymmetrical Hair Came to Be

Ever wonder why Allee’s hair was asymmetrical? It’s a good story and beautifully illustrates the boundless creativity that defined her! It all began in 1983, when she decided to cut her long hair. Unfortunately, the stylist gave her the “Farrah”—a once-popular style from the 1970s inspired by Farrah Fawcett. With its feathering and wisps, the cut was not only dated by 1983 but not a good match for Allee’s naturally curly hair. Allee hated it and in hope of making it look more like Farrah’s, she tried using Farrah-branded conditioner. 😆

When that didn’t work, she spent the next month cutting a little hair off of one side of her head every day hoping to, in her words, “stumble on the ideal length and then cut the other side to match.” Well, she never committed and her “lopsided experiment became permanent.”

The story takes an interesting turn years later when Allee met Farrah Fawcett herself, “When she told me that she loved my hair, I regaled her with the story of how it came to be. It made the biggest hair trauma of my life all worth it because I got to discuss The Farrah with Farrah.”
